Now this was a Pokemon battle The Devil thought to himself, but he was starting to get nervous about Alex's chances. The Devil needed Alex to win. They had to stay on course.

The Devil had set himself up in an ideal location. He was one of the few that hadn't run away who didn't have to dive behind any cover. He sat at a booth behind Snowflake, so she hadn't been able to see him at all. She also couldn't see the plan he had decided to put into action.

His unique Arbok slid up the booth and next to him. The Devil set a Pokeball into the mutated Pokemon's mouth and the snake was suddenly gone. Arbok slithered underneath the blanket of snow that Articuno had set across the battle and was on his way to Alex.

Alex looked up at his opponent and caught a glance he hadn't expected.  The Devil was sitting in a booth right behind Snowflake and his eye was peering intently over her shoulder.

"Crush, your attacks aren't working!"  Alex shouted in frustration.  "Pick up that table and throw it!"

"This isn't a wrestling match."  Snowflake laughed.

Crush reached out with his massive arm and took one of the tables he had knocked over.  Articuno used a sort of dive bomb attack and they clashed.  The table was smashed over the massive bird as it crashed into the Bastoise.  They both tumbled on the ground, upsetting booths and causing the few remaining spectators to scatter.

"Crush this is your chance!"  Alex shouted, "Grab on and don't let go!  Use bit until it gives up!"

But the Articuno was too quick.  It took to the air again and used Blizzard.

Alex looked up again, Snowflake wasn't even watching the battle, she was still just staring at Alex.  The Devil was still behind her, also not watching the fight.  But he wasn't looking at Alex or his opponent.  He was looking at the arena, the ground just a few feet in front of Alex.  The Devil nodded and then looked up to make eye contact.  Alex looked down, he saw a pokeball barely sticking out of the snow Articuno had created... and it had a tongue.

"Crush, go stand in front of Snowflake."  Alex said abruptly, "Articuno cant use Blizzard again or he'll hit her."

The pokemon rushed over to the trainer and blocked her field of vision.  Alex knew he couldn't win.  But he had a hunch that the Devil had just sent him a care package.  Though he had no idea what it could be or how much the broker was going to charge him for accepting the gesture.  As soon as Crush had occulted her field of vision he reached down and picked up the pokeball.  Articuno used blizzard again, as if to taunt his last order to Crush.  Snowflake didn't budge as the ice rained down around her.

"Crush, you're done."  He Alex said, calling him back just in time to let Snowflake receive the full effect of the last part of the Blizzard.  It knocked her over and blasted her back several feet, but she stood up and didn't even brush the snow off her clothes.

"You surrender?"  She mocked, "Some great master..."

Alex held up the new pokeball and prayed it had something he needed, "I'm not out of this match yet."  He defied.  He threw the ball and held his breath.

When the capsule opened a battle hardened Charizard stepped out on the field.  Alex knew he could win this now.  The pokemon had seen battle, and it bore many scars, but it was still willing to fight for a trainer who knew how to use authority.

This was an odd instance where both pokemon were weak to each other, and he knew he could capitalize on that better than his opponent.  But this victory was going to ring hollow since he had technically cheated.  Then again, Snowflake hadn't exactly abided by the rules.

"Charizard, get it!"  Alex yelled, "Shut dow its Bilazzard, bring it to the ground!"

The Craizard leaped into the air and raced after the Articuno which tried to counter with an Ice Beam.  Alex had to hand it to the bitch, she had trained her Articuno to battle for itself as she hadn't given any orders since she put it on the field.

Charizard took the attack in the chest and the ice formed around it like a vest, but it powered through it and wrapped up with its opponent and brought it down with a body slam.

Both creatures crashed and rolled on the ground, shaking the building.  "Roast it!"  Alex ordered, "Use Flame Thrower!"

With the Articuno pinned to the ice rink the dragon-like pokemon reared its head back and flames erupted from its mouth, engulfing the bird.  The Ice that had formed on Charizard's chest melted and the Articuno screeched in pain and terror.  Clearly this pokemon was not used to being defeated.

"Use Slash now!"  Alex demanded.

The Charizard reach up with its clawed arm and tore though the Articuno and caused knocked it out.

A hush fell on the small group of shocked spectators that remained.  after a few moments Charizrad erupted into his own celebration.

"I believe you are defeated."  Alex remarked, he looked over at the Glaceon.  It was still alive, but it needed help immediately.  And his own Gastly was in need of serious help.  Maybe he had underestimated this new breed of pokemon battling.

Snowflake recalled the Articuno, "Did you become a master by cheating?"  She asked.  "I don't give badges to cheaters."

"Save your speech."  Alex replied, "There are no laws in the Underground.  I didn't come down here to play by the rules."

Snowflake crossed her arms, "Mr. Veneta, there is one rule that the Underground takes very seriously."  She hissed.  "You fight your battles alone!"  She screamed, her voice high and shrill.  She turned and waved a gun, not at Alex, but at The Devil.

This was far from the first time somebody had pulled a gun on The Devil. He always made it out alive through different ways, so his mind was racing as to how it would happen this time.

The Devil's hand was in his lap and slid to his belt. He really didn't want to use his spare Pokemon like this in front of Alex. It would make their already fragile business relationship even more strained. This was a life and death situation though. He didn't have a choice.

The Pokeball had slipped into The Devil's hand and his finger was on the release button. He always kept a Pokemon with him that he could use in situations like this. The Devil's unremarkable Abra might have to be sacrificed if he thought that Snowflake would pull the trigger. He saw Alex's eyes look down at catch a glimpse of the Pokeball.

"I know you helped him." Snowflake, her eyes looking down the gun.

"I am not..." The Devil started to use his silver tongue when suddenly a figure came flying out beside Mark and tackled Snowflake to the ground. She yelled out as they collapsed to the ground.

"Run!" This stranger yelled out. "She'll have back up coming in!" Snowflake was turned around now and trying to reach for the gun. The Devil knew that they would have to fight their way out.

Alex was too flabbergasted to move.  First he saw The Devil getting ready to fight a gun with a pokeball, how he thought he could win that match didn't make any sense.  Then one of the onlookers intervened.  He shook off his confusion and headed the man's advice.  Quickly, he recalled the Charizard and then ran.  But he couldn't head toward the exit with out taking care of one thing...

That Glaceon... Snowflake was about to let it die.  Alex knew he had to help it. He rushed over and picked it up.  Then he felt a firm grip on the bak of his collar.  He turned as one of the bouncers lifted him to his feet.  The man was bald with wide set shoulders and a tattoo from his throat all the way up his cheek.  He tried to wrench himself free as the bouncer readied to punch him.

Then he just hit the floor.  He knew what taking a punch felt like, and he definitely didn't get hit.  He looked up and saw the devil standing over him with a broken hair in his hands.  "No time for heroics."  He said, "We have to get out!"

"Not though the lobby!"  The stranger shouted over the chaos as he grappled with Snowflake and two of her body guards.  Alex didn't know this guy, but he put up on hell of a fight.

"Back door!"  Alex yelled as he got up.  They both bolted for the back of the room.  They hit the door and blundered out into the street.

"Wait."  Alex said.  The Devil turned and gave him a confused look.  Alex extended the Glaceon toward him, "Take it."

"You can't go back in there!"  The Devil shouted.

"He saved our lives!"  Alex insisted.  Then he heard a series of gun shots, five evenly spaced detonations, ringing through the air.  The sound of chaos did not diminish.

"Don't be a fool!"  The Devil chastised.

Alex heard more gun shots and yielded.  They turned to run.  Then another gunshot rang out quite close behind them.  Alex looked back to see the man who had tackled Snowflake, "Run!"  He shouted and blundered out the door.

The Devil, Alex, and this stranger were running as fast as they could manage. Gunshots were still be fired at them, even though they had escaped where the Underground kept to itself. This would attract attention. But before he could focus on that, he had to make sure he would make it out alive.

Just when that thought crossed into his head, he saw another group of dangerous looking men that The Devil had a strong suspicion meant ill towards his group.

"In here!" Alex cried as the group turned into a small store on the street. Groups of people at tables turned to them as they entered, surprise and fear showed in their faces. The Devil released his Arbok that he had placed into it's Pokeball for a quick getaway. The sea of surprised faces suddenly started to scream. People were stampeding their way out the door. This prevented their pursers to enter the store immediately and gave The Devil, Alex, and Mark a chance to take cover. The store was suddenly filled with Pokemon who were wildly shooting attacks at their foes. Fire rained from Charizard, acid was shooting from Arbok, even this stranger had used a Koffing which was poisoning the enemies.

"Use your Koffing to smog the place." Alex told the stranger. "Charizard, take down this wall behind us!" Luckily, this Pokemon champ was skilled under pressure. It took only a moment for gas to fill the room, making the group have to hold their breath but allowed them to sneak out unseen after Charizard smashed through the back wall. The group hurried down through alleyways and streets until they felt like they had put quite a good distance between themselves and their attackers.

"We need to disappear fast."  The stranger urged, "The cops will be all over us in minutes if we stay in the streets."

"You know the Underground pretty well?"  Alex asked.

"Sure."  The guy said as he caught his breath, "You're not thinking about going down there again are you?"

Alex looked down at the Galceon in his arms, "The have to have some way to heal pokemon down there."

Their new companion shook his head, "The Underground may look shabby, but they use top of the line face recognition software, you go to any Underground location in the city and they will know who you are."

"I've got to get medical attention."  Alex insisted, "My Gastly is in pretty bad shape too."

"I think I might be able to find you a place."  The stranger said, "It would help us get out of sight too, from the cops and your new friends back there."

Alex hesitated to accept this guys help.

"And what makes you so trust worthy?"  The Devil asked, breaking into the conversation.

"I don't expect you to trust me."  The man replied, "But I did just save your skins."

"Exactly."  The Devil replied, "Why?"

The stranger blinked as if he hadn't anticipated that kind of question, "I couldn't just let that bitch get away with murder.  I've seen some shit down there, and I've been wanting out.  That battle was the last straw for me, I wasn't going to let them kill you like the others."  He said, "You don't owe me."  He continued, "I used you to make my break.  So we're even.  But maybe you could trust me."

"If you can help my pokemon just tell me where to go."  Alex replied.

The man looked to his left, "I know a guy."  He started, "Good friend of mine, he was trying to help me get out.  He escaped a few years ago and managed to stay alive.  He was in the game a long time before the Underground, I think he has his own healing equipment."

"Is that our best bet?"  Alex asked.

The guy nodded, "Yeah, he's always had my back."

"Hold on a minute."  The Devil interrupted, "I barely even trust you and now you're telling us to go stay with you friend?  This guy who broke out of the Underground?  He could be an informant!"

Alex paused at the thought, he couldn't afford to get caught up in this.  He had his mission, his vendetta, it meant he had to break some laws, but he didn't want to hurt anyone.  He looked down at the Glaceon again, "I'm going."  He said, "If you don't like it you can meet up with me later."

He looked over and the stranger was on his mobile, "Gean?  Gean, this is Mark."  He said quickly into the phone, "I'm out...  I know.... I know Gean! Shut up and listen!  I'm out I've got two more with me, we need a place to lay low for a day or two... No I don't know them...  Listen I've got two critically injured pokemon, do you still have your equipment?  Not mine, one belonged to Snowfalke, the other belongs to the guy that challenged her... Snowflake... yeah, she battled her Glaceon until it was almost dead, this guy just scooped it when we all dashed for the door.  Yeah.  Are you going to help us or not?  No...  I'm sure... For god sakes Gean I've been in the Underground for five years don't you think I'd know an undercover agent when I see one?  Yeah, not they don't belong down there, but they aint cops either...  Gean, you got to trust me on this."  He looked at the two and then sighed with relief, "Ten... fifteen tops.  Thanks, Gean."  He hung up the phone, "Got a place to crash, I'm going.  Gean cleared you two if you think you can trust me."

"This is the dumbest idea yet." The Devil said as they followed behind Mark.

"I told you that you didn't have to come." Alex said as he continued to look ahead.

"I'm not letting you go alone." The Devil simply said. "And your Ghastly will need to be in top form if we want to continue this mission. I have a feeling that this will be far from the last risk we will have to take."

They had made it past another gym, so the two of them were on their way. The Devil was expecting more questions around this time.  He figured Alex would want to know more about what The Devil was doing and probably want to be upset about The Devil nearly using a Pokemon that sleeps 18 hours a day to be a bullet shield. But so far Alex had kept to himself. He regarded The Devil as a necessary evil for him and didn't seem to need information to accompany that.

This stranger, Mark, was leading them in and out of paths through the city now. The Devil was keeping his eyes on his every move. He may have saved The Devil's life, but The Devil didn't ask him to and The Devil wasn't the type of person to feel obligated to owe someone a favor. But he needed Alex to be content.

At The Devil's suggestion, the group stopped between a couple of stores until the three men all disappeared behind a building. After a moment, the three reappeared with all new clothing on as if they were three new men.

"It's right down this alley." Mark said to the others.

Alex looked at The Devil and then down at he Glaceon in his arms, "I'm going with him."  He didn't know for sure that following this stranger was a good idea, but he felt sincerity in his promise that he could help his Gastly and the Glaceon that he had stolen from Snowflake.  In his previous pokemon journey he had faced a multitude of challenges he had not expected, and he knew this time would present an entirely new set of challenges and dangers.  This would be the first of many of these new challenges and Alex prayed that it would turn out okay.  In this new world of Pokemon he had no idea who he could trust.

"I guess I'm going with you."  The Devil replied with a hint of trepidation.  "We're a team now."

Alex didn't feel any more at ease by the comment, he still didn't know if he could trust The Devil, even after the help he had offered during his last fight.

"Oh yeah, before we go."  Mark said, "I think you wanted this."  he extended his hand toward Alex.

Alex reached out for whatever the new addition to their group was holding.  He felt a small metal object land in his palm.  He looked and saw that it was the badge he had fought for.  "I don't understand."  Alex muttered.

"I picked it off of Snowflake when I tackled her."  Mark replied, "I figured you wanted that.  After all the effort you put into that battle."  He added as he glanced up at The Devil.  "Now let's get in doors before we draw any attention."

They walked slowly through the door, Mark led the way while the other two kept their eyes moving and looking at everything. There was a red light that fell harshly onto everything. The Devil had seen this type of set up before. Since the closing of Pokecenters, healing Pokemon had turned to alleyways and shady dealers. There was always a chance that the doctor would double cross you or be an undercover cop. There was various pieces of surgical equpiment laying across the room, some spots of blood and pokeballs around the room.

The Devil wondered what Alex thought of this. This was very different from the pokemon training he had known, but healing pokemon was often the part that old dealers couldn't cope with. In old days, they would take the pokemon they care about so deeply to be healed inside their pokeballs. Now, because of the seedy way things are dealt with in the Underground, pokemon healing was done in a way that was more similar to human medicine. As they looked around, an older man walked into the room. He had scars on his arms and face, even wearing a patch over his left eye. All were telling signs of a serious Pokemon doctor - having to deal with the powered animals was a dangerous job.

"Gean, this is... Alex."  Mark said, "Sorry for the sudden move.  I saw my chance to break out and I took it."

Gean grabbed Mark by the collar and pushed him into the wall, "They better be legit!"  He hissed, trying to make the conversation private.  "I can't believe you brought two strangers here.  Are you sure they aren't agents?"

Mark smiled, and gently pushed the doctors hands away, "They need your help. If they were agents they would have killed everyone in the damn gym.  Instead they were nearly killed."

Gean released Mark and glared at the newcomers, "Who are you?"  He demanded, "Why should I trust you?"

"I can't give you a good reason."  Alex said, and dropped his gaze to the injured pokemon in his arms, "But I don't have a good reason to trust you either...."  He looked up and stared into the doctor's eyes, they were cautious and full of suspicion, "But I need to heal my pokemon... I need your help... I understand healing isn't cheep like it used to be."

The doctor eased up a bit, but his eyes did not indicate the remotest feeling of trust, "I can provide that service."  He replied "But you cannot afford it."

Alex looked back at the man, "You still have connections don't you?"  He asked, "To the Underground?"

Gean didn't respond.

"You're not completely free."  Alex continued, "You want to sever your ties, but you need their business."

"You can't afford my services."  The man repeated.

Alex began to walk toward him, "No, you can't afford to deny me.  I've got your way out, I've done my home work, an average emergency restoration in the Underground runs 2,000 credits.  I have two emergency pokemon and two that need minor medical attention.  I'm willing to set you free."  He stopped just short of the doctor and lifted the injured Glaceon toward him, "How much do you need to cut all ties? To have the normal life you want?"

"151,000 credits."  He said coldly.

Alex offered the injured pokemon to him, "Do it.  Can you do the transfer from here or do I need to bring cash?"

The doctor looked down at the pokemon, "I don't know what your game is, but you're a fool."

"200,000" Alex said, "I'll get the cash while you work."

Gean raised his eyebrow, "Cash?"  He asked, "Nobody in the Underground has that kind of money."

"I'm new."  Alex replied, "Help me.  Help me and you can make any life you choose.  200,000 right now.  And I'll need your services again, I'll pay double the going rate each visit."

"Are you sure this isn't a set up?"  Gean questioned Mark.

"Do we have a deal?"  Alex asked, "You don't know who I am, but I'm not your enemy unless you make me.  I can set you free or I can ruin you right now.  You don't trust me, I get that.  I don't trust you either, but a mercenary's loyalty can be bought."

"Pay me first."  Gean replied coldly.

"Glaceon doesn't have time!"  Alex shouted, "Start working.  I'll bring you cash."

The doctor tiled his head and cracked his neck, "I have a secure system, I can make the credit transfer right now.  No one will be able to track the payment, you'll be safe."

"I was never worried about that."  Alex replied.
